OOTD – DIY and Wolf Online

25 Mar

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs a very strict rule, I am not a DIY’er. I am intensely clumsy and should not therefore, be allowed in the presence of scissors. This weekend though, I approached the scissors, picked them up, and actually managed to use them without drawing blood. By DIY’ing the old jeans that I have come to hate, I have turned them into a ripped magnificence and it feels as though I have new jeans, which is great because I am feeling the student poverty hard at the moment.

Will you please take a look at the rings I’m wearing and gasp as is only appropriate in the presence of such beauty. They are from Wolf Online, which is a home made and beautiful boutique all the way over in Australia. The delivery is free WORLDWIDE and the prices are extremely decent anyway. Safe to say, I love them to pieces and I’d be really disappointed if you didn’t go and check them out right now here.

OOTD: More Pastels

19 Mar

Don’t trust anyone who says that too much of a good thing is bad for you. They are a) boring, and b) BORING. I’m all for too much cake and too much laughing: maximalism in life, if you will.

I know that you really couldn’t class this outfit as maximalist, but you have to admit that I have dug right into the cereal box of pastels with a gigantic ladle and eaten the whole thing with a pint of milk (please go with my metaphor.)

I bagged this amazing Gap trench coat from eBay for a mere fiver. It’s in pristine condition and is as near enough to the Burberry version as a student living off jacket potatoes that have things sprouting from them could possibly ever hope for.

These pics were shot by Sheffield local aspiring fashion photog Abby May. Find her blog here and here!

Revolución de Cuba

17 Mar

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASince visiting a certain gourmet burger restaurant in London recently (MeatLiquor) and seeing their frank Twitter message, I am inspired to review restaurants from the following standard: “come hungry; leave drunk.” Now I know that you know that I know where this is going and last week Simon and I did indeed come to Revolución de Cuba off West Street hungry, and pitifully for me, I did leave drunk.

The mojito and burrito deal that runs all the time at Revolucion de Cuba is a pretty thrifty one, considering that in Manchester you’d be lucky to get a napkin with your cocktail for a tenner. For this though, you get:

a) a ginormous burrito with meat of choice (pulled pork, obv).

b) a little pot of nachos with salsa.

c) any mojito on the menu apart from the Mojito Royale.

d) drunk.

In regard of d), I’m not making any promises, but if you’re a petite female who has a boyfriend that doesn’t like his own mojito then you’re sorted.

The interior is seriously awesome, if a little trippy seeing as just a step through the door transports you from St George’s moribund entrance to the inside of an old tram shed that has been converted into a cabana with frightening speed.

The burrito itself was different from others I’ve had in the past because the wrap was toasted rather than a classically soft tortilla. It was, of course, delicious and though I’m no good at describing what food tastes like, I will say that it’s up there with a half cous cous, half pasta New Leaf salad for how full it gets you. Especially if you have churros afterwards. Which we did. I confess to needing a little nap afterwards and if that doesn’t make you want to go with your last tenner then I give up.

This Is Syd And Mallory

9 Mar

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There’s a pair of trainers hanging on the phone line above the yellow boutique on Devonshire Street in Sheffield. Written on the soles, is ‘Bits and Bobs’. This is Syd and Mallory emporium, and these dangling shoes, as well as a lot of the beautiful clutter within is off kilter and honest, reminding me of movies like The Breakfast Club. I don’t think John Hughes would have been disappointed, either. There’s a hell of a lot to thrust your fist in the air to in this shop: if only they played Simple Minds on a loop!

Syd and Mallory is featured on ASOS Marketplace and they were  at The Clothes Show Live last year. They do their own clothes –  Quirky little things that are exactly what you want without knowing you ever wanted it, and they usually come in the form of unforgivably humorous T shirts. A bit naughty and very, very cute, I can only describe them as dirty, pretty little things.

They also sell vintage clothes, but these are vintage clothes that look new; they look as though they’ve come fresh from movie sets of past decades. Simon bought this amazing leather jacket that was probably worn by someone who picked lots of fights and threw lots of beer in the seventies, and definitely would have been picked up by Alex Turner had he gotten there first.

I said that I was reminded of John Hughes’ movies in this emporium, but in reality, it’s a network of the coolest things from, or inspired by the coolest decades. James Dean boys and Brooke Shields girls: these are the kids that Syd and Mallory create. And I want to be one.

Find Syd and Mallory on Twitter, and on their website here.

OOTD: Underwear As Outerwear

1 Mar

lingerie2

While we’re all getting excited about FW14, I’m also still enjoying the FW13 trends that have disappeared under the glitter of fashion month’s ever moving cycle. I absolutely adore the lingerie as outerwear that Marc Jacobs sent down his hotel corridor of a catwalk last year in New York and so I’m ignoring the rules of sartorial progress and wearing it still.

dinosaur broochstarbucksYesterday, my mum came to visit me in Sheffield and we spent most of the time eating and shopping. Being a big big city girl, I have no shame in saying that I just don’t like Sheffield that much, but we made the most of it, and our day consisted of: a giant slab of red velvet cake, the most beautiful dog I have ever seen at Starbucks, a screen printing gallery, a fluffy flamingo gift and a Designosaur brooch. I also was bought a delicious animal-print dress from Chelsea Girl at River Island which makes me feel a bit like Alexa Chung. Coming soon! X

OOTD: Pinafore

29 Jan

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHello! My outfit of the day features this pinafore that is from Primark but that I got via eBay. I love this goddamn site – if you know what you’re searching for then it’s golden. Be really specific by including the colour, texture, store and item: “applique flower Asos ballerina boxing gloves”, for example. Wouldn’t that be wonderful at the Olympics!?

I’m leaving Lincoln today where my boyfriend lives, to come back to Sheffield and an exam in the morning. It’s closed book Renaissance and I’m sick sick sick of humanists and their poncy circumlocution and isocolon. Wish me luck? x
